Diwali Song 2022
“Light the Night” was inspired by my coworkers who asked me to participate in their annual Diwali Celebration. The challenge was that I couldn’t find a song in English about Diwali, so I wrote one instead.
For the first celebration, I sang this on acoustic guitar complete with audience participation. For the second celebration, I produced the song as I heard it in my head complete with a sitar, flute, and of course, upbeat drums.
Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is a major Hindu festival celebrated by millions of people around the world. It usually takes place in October or November, depending on the lunar calendar. The festival symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and good over evil.
Diwali is characterized by a variety of customs and traditions, including lighting oil lamps (diyas), decorating homes with colorful rangoli (a type of floor art made from colored powders or flowers), and setting off fireworks. Families come together to share festive meals, exchange gifts, and perform religious rituals.
The festival has different significance in various regions and communities. For example, in Northern India, Diwali marks the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after his victory over the demon king Ravana, as recounted in the epic Ramayana. In Southern India, it commemorates the defeat of the demon Narakasura by Lord Krishna. In some communities, Diwali also celebrates the goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity.
Overall, Diwali is a time for joy, togetherness, and renewal, with a focus on celebrating the triumph of light and positivity.
