Cruise to Bermuda

My family and I recently took a 9-day cruise to Bermuda. When everyone talked about bringing a book to read, I immediately thought I should have something to do in case of “down-time” since we would be at sea for a total of 5 days. My watercolors were the perfect hobby project for me to bring along! The first two days at sea, we checked out the ship, enjoyed the hot tubs, ate a lot of food, and attended a few shows so I didn’t have any downtime.

When we got to Bermuda, it was unfortunately going to be a rainy day, so both our initial and backup excursions were cancelled. Despite Royal Caribbean Cruise Line being unable to drive us to the beach, we immediately snagged a cab and went to Horseshoe Bay on our own. Because we were quick thinkers and determined to get there first, we were able to snag the only available table under cover right next to the only bar. We took turns heading to the water in the rain. I had brought my own snorkel, so we had a blast checking out the cool underwater sea life. My son even survived a man-of-war sting on his finger! Needless to say, we made the best out of an otherwise bum situation.

On the way out of Bermuda, I painted Horseshoe Bay as I saw it in my mind that day. Bright and sunny and beautiful. I was able to finish this painting and my painting of Sint Maartin and started my painting of Haiti while on the ship. I painted my picture of Puerto Rico after we got home with the help of a much needed reminder lesson on perspective from my husband who studied architecture. I typically do not have man-made things in my paintings, but I am proud of the way my painting of Old San Juan turned out.

In Mano Bay, International flights take off and land right over the beach. I painted this plane flying over the beach with the people waving just as we did when we witnessed it for ourselves!

We have been to Old San Juan in Puerto Rico several times now, and we enjoyed walking around the shady streets and shopping, of course!

We did not get to experience much in Labadee unfortunately since the cruise line again cancelled our excursion (and did not inform us until 5 minutes before it was supposed to begin). We did, however, get back on the boat to enjoy the pool and hot tub, and I painted this while sitting on the cruise ship deck looking out over Haiti.
